Garden State Partnership for Teacher Quality

The Garden State Partnership for Teacher Quality (GSPTQ) will improve the academic achievement of K-12 students in high need urban schools through the recruitment, preparation and retention of highly qualified teachers in New Jersey. William Paterson University, Kean University, and Rowan University, in collaboration with high-need LEAs of Bridgeton, Camden, Jersey City, Passaic, Paterson, and Union City and the New Jersey Department of Education will reach a total of 92,000 students in the highest need school districts in our state. The project will reform the Pre-Baccalaureate programs at partnering universities and establish the Garden State Urban Teacher Residency Program that will culminate in dual certification and a master's degree, ensuring both highly-qualified teacher status and expertise in areas of critical shortage including special education and bilingual education.

Urban Teacher Residency
Kean University, in partnership with William Paterson and Rowan Universities, will be offering the Garden State Urban Teacher Residency Program. The Urban Teacher Residency is a highly competitive grant program that will select 5 prospective teacher candidates from Kean University per year to participate in an 18 month dual certification program which will culminate in teacher certification and a master’s degree in Special Education, English as a Second Language (ESL) or Bilingual/Bicultural Education. We are currently seeking college seniors, recent graduates, and career changers who are eligible to teach Mathematics, Science, English, or Social Studies at the middle or high school level. Prospective candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in a non-education major. Mathematics and Science majors are strongly encouraged to apply.

A full-time commitment is required during the year of residency in a Middle or High School in Jersey City.  Each Resident will receive a living stipend of $30,000* during the residency period (September - June).

*Candidates must be willing to sign an "Agreement to Serve" indicating their commitment to teach in a high need school district for at least 3 years following the completion of the residency in order to receive the $30,000 stipend. Please note that candidates are responsible for all tuition and fees associated with the Master’s degree program.
